Welcome to the MY Business Blog

The Rome Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with the Mid-York Library System. We encourage you to read "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman, and consider the impact of Friedman's 10 "flatteners". We hope it leads to meaningful dialogue in the workplace, classrooms, libraries, and at special community programs being developed by MYLS and other partners for Fall 2007.

To get you thinking:
What you are doing to survive and thrive in an ever-changing global economy? What obstacles prevent you from thriving? What can your local chamber do to help level the playing field for local businesses? How has technology changed the way you do business? What issues can business organizations bring to the attention of lawmakers to help you succeed?

Starting September 1, we will post 4 specific questions about doing business in a global economy. We welcome your comments and other perspectives, and look forward to learning how we can better serve you.

There is an interesting book review in Tuesday's (9/4/07) USA Today. David Lynch reviews the book China Road by Rob Gifford, a former NPR Beijing correspondent. Lynch recounts his travels through China and focuses on China's people. What we generally read in the popular media is of China's burgeoning economy and huge annual growth rates. According to the review, Gifford is somewhat pessimistic about China's future. "What we have in China is a mobile 21st-century society shackled to a sclerotic 1950's Leninist-style political system. The economy is changing, the society is changing, but the politics are not..." This is the first I have read about China's weakness. Has anyone else read of this philosophy?
